O chamado
“Somos a causa unica de nosso proprio sofrimento”

§ A longa jornada:
Buscando informacao e aprendizado, um dia, percebi que na verdade estava procurando algo que eu nao poderia encontrar se eu nao olhasse para dentro de mim mesma. A minha essencia, estava la. Sempre esteve. Estava mascarada de conceitos sociais. Fantasiada de descricoes que eu carreguei na mochila depois de uma longa viagem e ter cruzado cada um dos oceanos e dos continentes. Eu tinha tanto medo de deixar morrer a menininha que existia e existe dentro de mim, que eu insistia em nao crescer. Nao era so a menininha, mas nao queria perder a memoria, as boas lembrancas, os momentos que foram eternizados.
Foram exatos 12 anos de brigas comigo mesma, mas que alcancaram um resultado inesperado. Um chamado divino e uma mulher de 31 anos que nao tem a menor vergonha de ser o que e. Uma mulher, guerreira sim, que nao deixa a peteca cair, que conquista com o sorriso de menina e tenta com a vibracao dos olhos negros, Pelo menos tenta, amenizar as dores de um mundo que nao quer ser mudado.
O fundamento de tudo na vida e o amor. O amor cura. Qualquer que seja a doenca, ate aquelas que espremem a alma. As tecnicas, especialmente dentro das terapias asiaticas, nao sao trazidas ate nossas maos e olhos ate que merecamos.
Muitos perguntam como que uma jornalista pode ter trocado comunicacao por terapia. Troca? Eu pergunto sempre. E explico. Nao foi uma troca. Eh um acrescimo de conhecimento. Cada metade do meu coracao ama uma parte e ate o fim, tentarei desfrutar de ambas as artes.
Mas a verdade, verdadeira, vai um pouco mais alem. A comunicologa, exerceu muito bem por dez anos suas funcoes. No dia em que o divino cutucou, foi agressivo a alma. E a pergunta nao pode cicatrizar as feridas da esfera humana.
- Cansei de observar e redigir catastrofes que vivenciava diariamente. Era hora de fazer algo para modificar aquele mundo doentio que me incomodava. Quase enlouqueci. Por muito tempo busquei respostas ate nos biscoitos da sorte dos restaurantes orientais. Encontrei a cura para minha hipocrisia dentro de mim mesma e decidi expandir minha experiencia e aprendizado para quem quisesse contar com meu auxilio.
§ A cura:
O primeiro chamado veio em 1997. Literalmente alucinada, encontrei falsas desculpas e segui a “menina maluquinha”.
No final de 2004, o segundo chamado divino. Este foi doloroso. Nao dava para fingir que nao era comigo, eu estava no leito de morte. Atendi a ligacao celestial e iniciei um processo de limpeza. So depois de ter a alma limpa, abri o coracao e comecei a estudar o que estava acontecendo com a minha essencia. Depois de recuperar o que eu tinha de melhor. Aprendi com o simples. Aprendi e reconheci cada pedacinho de mim e ganhei habilidades para amar de novo e cuidar do proximo.
O dificil e aprender que somos nosso proprio veneno e somos responsaveis pelos antidotos tambem. Mas claro que essa invisivel coneccao pode se tornar bem mais obvia com a ajuda de um terapeuta. E e este o trabalho que eu exerco com o coracao. Com satisfacao. Mais fascinada a cada dia!
E inexplicavel o prazer de ver sorriso em um rosto que so expressava dor. Era mais saboroso do que ver uma materia publicada ou um artigo elogiado. Passar uma noite sem dormir para entender como funciona o labirinto do sistema fisico do ser humano, para mim era muito mais do que uma madrugada de anatomia e meridianos. Era de alguma maneira entender a essencia do ser etereo. Era ‘’sacar’’ a mente, a alma e o coracao de outrem.
Curar e esquecer de nos mesmos, de nossas vaidades, das competicoes extenas. Eh descobrir limites na tecnologia e entender que para nos, seres etereos, nao existe impossivel. Eh incondicional doacao de si. E completar a si mesmo de alegria por ter deixado o mundo melhor do que estava antes. E uma arte. Arte de retalhar e juntar pedacos o tempo todo. E responsabilidade de costureira na vespera de carnaval.
As tecnicas sao muitas, que mixadas podem produzir um arco-iris de infinitas possibilidades e milagres. O que demoramos uma vida inteira para entender eh que somos seres criadores. Criamos e recriamos a nos mesmos o tempo todo e consequentemente, inovamos a nossa historia.
Enfim, acredite! A cura existe para todo e qualquer mal. Nos e nossas mentes despreparadas produzem nossas doencas e dores.
A cura esta dentro da alma, pronta para quem quiser. A doenca so se expande para o terreno fisico quando a essencia do ser humano esta em pedido de socorro.
Nao somos medicos. Nao somos curandeiros. Nao somos bruxos. Somos terapeutas. Nao curamos corpos fisicos ou doencas. Curamos alma. Curamos essencia. Balanceamos um ser lindo que ja existe dentro de cada um que permitiu a si buscar a nossa ajuda. Doamos nosso coracao. Abdicamos de um eu superfluo e com tecnicas milenares acopladas a um tempo que fisicamente nao existe, buscamos em cada paciente o que ha de melhor.
Lapidamos diamantes e regamos rosas para que elas crescam bem coloridas.
Contratamos alguns anjos e com varinhas de luz emprestadas, aliviamos ardor.
Cada paciente e um novo livro. Cada mal, uma escola. Nao so re-educamos individuos, sublinhamos beleza. Beleza natural, beleza verdadeira. Aprendemos mais com eles do que deixamos de heranca.
O bem estar do proximo e a mais bela das faculdades divinas.
Que Deus me illumine todos os dias para que eu possa aliviar qualquer dor e que eu tenha tempo para repassar adiante tudo que aprendi e que aprendo diariamente.
Que eu possa transformar lagrimas em sorrisos.
Que eu possa trazer na dor, respostas.
Que eu faca sempre possivel um encontro de ti contigo mesmo.
Que chegue ate mim, sabedoria necessaria para melhorar este mundo. Deixa-lo ainda mais florido, mais farto e sempre, equilibrado.
Acima de tudo, agradeco a Deus por permitir todos os dias que eu de continuidade a um trabalho que me satisfaz, me fascina e me energiza para que eu ajude sempre quem de mim precisar.

SKYBLUE CHAMPIONS!!! - With Ageros last gasp winner.
Full time season packed with emotions. Nobody could predict who would really end up champions up to the last second. For the first time, Barclays premier league has been decided on by goal difference.
Mancini made a marvelous job and of course all of the players had a particular participation, but was Agero, a little argentinian who scored the goal on the 4th minute of extra time against QPR, who was almost relegated and made all the history of this season.
QPR have been for 90 minutes the big hero, transfering the title to United. on 58' Barton - who recently left prision - kicked Carlos Tevez and was sent off, leaving Queens Park with just 10 men. Even this situation wasn't a trouble.
The result of this match was 3x2 to MCfc, but much stress till the very last goal. City started with a Zabaletas goal on 39'; Then Cessi (48') and Mackie (64') swap the whole results on the table. End of 90' minutes and apparently the trophy was going to MUfc. The signs showed 5' extra time and nobody could believe anymore in a victory which was a big betting of UK. Dzeko scored at 91' and still they needed a new goal. As said Maradona once, was a help of God, appeared just a minute later his 23 years old son-in-law, Kun Agero - who took a yellow card - scored again and garanteed the podium to Skyblues after 44 years in the bottle.
The Belgian Captain Kompany was first to stand with the trophy and shared with his collegues and all the stadium came alive to sing and dance to 'Hey Jude' from the Beatles.
Deserved, congrats to City!
SUNDERLAND 0 X 1 MAN UTD
It Wasn't that easy the away match, but counting with Rooneys goal at 20' made Mr. Alex and all the sponsors in the world believes MUfc were to be the champions of this season.
United has the same 86 points of City but the difference of 8 goals (56 x 64), what determinated the actual winner and placed Utd in the second position.
MCfc & MUfc, played 38 matches and acumulated 89 points; Also, both won 28, lost 5 and drown 5 matches. The difference is just 8 goals. City scored 93 and conceded 29 & United scored 89 and conceded 33.
WBA 2 x 3 Arsenal
Roy Hodgsons final game in charge before be takes over as england manager.
Both teams kept their positions on the table (10th & 3th) but the Gunners garentee a place on next yers Champions league.
Benayoun, who is on loan from Chelsea, started well for Arsenal, scoring 0x1 at 4'.
At 12', Long makes the signs equal and at 15' with the goal from Durrans, West Brom changed as a momentaneous winner of this match.
Arsene screaming with his boys managed to revert it to 2x3 with goals from Andre Santos (30') and Koscielny (54')
Everton 3 x 1 Newcastle
With no doubt, Newcastle been the dark horse of the season and finish the Premier League on 5th, above Chelsea.
Everton did well in doors and scored 4 times. Pienaar (16), Jelavic (27) and Heitinga (65'). When was 3x0, at 73' trying the deffence, Hibbert scored a own goal.
Norwich 2 x 0 Aston Villa
Villa played relaxed for the first time because on the last match garanteed to keep them in the premier league.
In carrow Road and almost 27K people, scored Holt (8') and Jackson (22')
Stoke 2 x 2 Bolton
The draw which relegated Bolton wasn't aggressive at all and had 6 minutes of extra time.
The two goals from Stoke come from Walters at 13' and 77'.
Fighting for there life, the feeling was that they just had one player giving the blood to carry on the Premier League: Davies, who scored twice for Bolton at 39' and 45'.
Wigan 3 x 2 Wolves
The match was needless to both teams. Wolves was alread realegated and Wigan was keeping the same position.
Wigan goals was scored by Di Santo (12'), Boyce (14' and 79'); and Wolves by Jarvis (9') and Fletcher (86')
Swansea 1 x 0 Liverpool
Keeping the positions, Graham scored at 86' when the most of other matches had already ended.
Chelsea 2 x 1 Blackburn
The big Blues played at home to an easy match. For Chelsea, an unsatisfactory sixth place, their worst in a decade. Looks like Matteo focused so much on the Champions league, but if his team do not win the final against Bayern Munich, they wont garrantee the 4th English spot, giving it away to Tottenham, who is at the moment on the ''wait list''.
Captain Terry scored for Chelsea at 31' and just 3 minutes later all Stamford Bridge screamed Goaaal again when the Portuguese Raul Meireles scored.
The goal that reduced the difference for the already realegated Rovers comes from Yakubu at 60'.
Spurs 2 x 0 Fulham
The White hart vibrated with the results on the full time but expected for whole 90 minutes an extra goal on the match W.Brom x Arsenal, where was the unique chance to garrentee the spot in the champions league before the match Chelsea x Bay happen on May19. Now, is time for a moment of waiting. If Chelsea lose, Tottenham will play the next cup, but if the Blues win, Spurs will be out of competition this year.
to resume, Harrys team played well, disapointed with Bale who didnt put all of his potencial but surprised with the 'kiwi' Ryan Nelsen, who even playing as a defender, open some oppertunities for goals.
Adebayor open the big finals with the first goal of the 38th round, at 2' and Defoe confirmed scoring again at 63'.
Tottenham had a excellent performance this season, but after Redknepp was advertised as a next potential English Squad manager, the country saw Spurs going down a bit.With the appointment of roy hodgson that all seems in the past and spurs are back to there winning ways.

La televisione in Gran Bretagna ha senz'altro un ruolo molto importante, ma non credo sia centrale quanto lo e' in Italia. I quotidiani qui in GB sono molto diffusi e molto letti da tutte le fasce sociali, anche se in molti gran parte la loro qualita' e' scadente e si basano piu' sullo scandalo e la provocazione -- penso a The Sun e alle sue classiche donnine in topless a pagina 3 -- che sulla qualita' del giornalismo.
Sono comunque una fonte considerevole di informazione (e disinformazione), e tolti di mezzo questi tabloid semiscandalistici, il cui contenuto e' fortemente controllato dagli orientamenti politici dei proprietari, ci sono testate ben piu' autorevoli che contano un elevato numero di lettori e fanno del gran giornalismo.
Sono testate che non hanno scrupoli a fare quello che curiosamente in Italia ben pochi giornalisti fanno e ben pochi editori consentono, ossia andare sul campo, magari in incognito, e fare vera ricerca, verifica e indagine.
Questo tipo di giornalismo in Italia sembra essere presente soltanto nei programmi satirici come Striscia la Notizia o Le Iene.
Un'altra differenza importante è che l'offerta televisiva inglese è molto piu' frammentata di quella italiana. Oltre ai soli cinque canali terrestri (il canale generalista BBC1, il canale 'culturale' BBC2, la TV commerciale di ITV, Channel 4 e Channel 5), ci sono infatti da anni le offerte via satellite di Sky, che contava gia' un milione di abbonati nel 1990 e ora ne ha 17 milioni.
In piu' si e' aggiunta da un paio d'anni la famosa televisione digitale terrestre tanto contestata in Italia, che inizialmente e' stato un flop ma ora, dopo un drastico cambio di politica commerciale (abolizione del canone per la TDT), sta prendendo piede, con decine di canali gratuiti. Un decoder TDT qui costa 75 euro e si compra al supermercato.
In conseguenza di questa frammentazione, e' raro che l'intera popolazione si trovi a condividere lo stesso programma, per cui una trasmissione televisiva non ha lo stesso impatto e la stessa grande audience di un evento televisivo italiano.
Ci sono alcune eccezioni notevoli, come le soap opera Eastenders e l'immortale Coronation Street, che sono in onda da sempre (la seconda è iniziata nel 1960) e sistematicamente radunano oltre dieci di milioni di spettatori a puntata e sono parte integrante della cultura locale (e' normale sentire due persone sull'autobus che discutono delle disavventure degli interpreti di "Corrie" come se si trattasse di persone reali, spesso con effetti comici), o l'autorevolissimo Ten O'Clock News della TV commerciale.
ZN: Molto spesso si contrappone la BBC alla Rai: in termini di presenza della pubblicità , in termini di informazione attendibile ed oggettiva, in termini di spazio dato a programmi di qualità come divulgazione scientifica ed artistica, concerti di musica "seria", programmi educativi. E' un mito, meglio una "bufala" o c'è qualcosa di vero?
Paolo Attivissimo: C'e' molto di vero. Innanzi tutto, la differenza che balza agli occhi e' la totale, totale assenza di pubblicita' nei canali della BBC. Niente telepromozioni, niente spot, nulla. Il canone televisivo costa 116 sterline (circa 167 euro) l'anno, ma il piacere di vedere un film o un documentario senza interruzioni val bene la differenza rispetto alla soluzione mista canone+spot della Rai.
L'attendibilita' dell'informazione BBC e' proverbiale, tant'e' vero che spesso persino nei paesi arabi -- in cui il Regno Unito non e' molto ben visto -- viene usata, tramite il World Service satellitare e radiofonico, per sapere davvero cosa sta succedendo. La BBC si vanta spesso di essere stata criticata, ai tempi del conflitto delle Falklands, dalla Thatcher per essere stata "troppo filoargentina".
C'e' da dire comunque che c'e' una sorta di censura piuttosto pesante, o per meglio dire una scelta di produrre informazione rassicurante, combinata con un'etica professionale molto rigorosa e rispettata. Qui l'integrita' del giornalista e' tutto.
Proprio in questi giorni, un celeberrimo conduttore televisivo, Robert Kilroy-Silk, si e' visto sospendere il programma per aver fatto delle affermazioni razziste (anti-islamiche) in un articolo di giornale. Qui in GB, una microfonata in faccia come quella di Del Noce all'inviato di Striscia la Notizia sarebbe costato il posto al direttore di Raiuno.
Il telegiornale non e' gridato, non si sbattono immagini di pozze di sangue in prima serata, si avvisano i telespettatori se ci sono sequenze con flash ripetuti di fotografi (possono indurre crisi negli epilettici) o immagini troppo crude (mai comunque trasmesse prima delle 21, ora dello "spartiacque" o "watershed", ossia del momento in cui in teoria i bambini vanno a letto -- e molti lo fanno davvero).
Questo non significa che non vi sia informazione o che vi siano tabu': dopo le 21 va in onda davvero di tutto. Non intendo pornografia (quella va in onda sui canali commerciali, ed e' comunque piuttosto soft), ma documentari sui temi piu' delicati e difficili, dall'eutanasia alla vita di chi e' stato sfigurato dalla guerra (un reduce delle Falkland che ha perso letteralmente il viso e' diventato un testimonial di molte campagne sociali) alla vaginoplastica, senza imbarazzi o mascherine a coprire dettagli anatomici.
Johnny 'Rotten' Lydon puo' parlare liberamente di far sesso con la regina senza essere oscurato. Purtroppo questo non ha aiutato gli inglesi, finora, a togliersi di dosso la proverbiale difficolta' a parlare seriamente di sesso, col risultato che l'isola e' in testa alla classifica delle gravidanze minorili, ma questa e' un'altra storia.
Il fatto di avere una chiara missione culturale su mandato del governo e di non essere soggetta ai vincoli numerici di audience ma a quelli piu' sfumati di "gradimento" (non importa avere 10 milioni di spettatori distratti, importa averne 500.000 entusiasti) ha permesso alla BBC di mantenere una tradizione di produzione di documentari esportati in tutto il mondo, al punto che la BBC e' il secondo esportatore mondiale di programmi televisivi dopo gli Stati Uniti.
ZN: Tv e Politica. In Italia sempre più si parla di una Rai troppo dipendente o censurata dal Governo, quello in un dato momento in carica, prima di CentroSinistra e poi di CentroDestra. In Gran Bretagna abbiamo avuto, però, lo scontro tra il Premier laburista Blair e la BBC a proposito del dossier armi segrete e il connesso suicidio dello scienziato. Un parere spassionato, Paolo?
Paolo Attivissimo: La mia impressione e' che in Italia (seguo i canali Rai via satellite) la Rai, come la TV commerciale, abbia sempre operato una sorta di "autocensura preventiva" per ingraziarsi il potente di turno. Non mi sembra che la cosa sia piu' marcata oggi rispetto a prima.
Ricordiamo tutti l'espulsione di Beppe Grillo per una battuta sui socialisti, e in tempi piu' lontani Tognazzi e Vianello ostracizzati per un'allusione al Presidente della Repubblica. Avendo avuto occasione, nel mio piccolo, di parlare con alcuni personaggi Rai, ho avuto la chiara sensazione che ci sono cose che si sanno ma che e' meglio non dire per non trovarsi la carriera bloccata; parlo non solo di questioni politiche, ma anche di interessi commerciali.
Ci sono alcune grandi aziende italiane, quelle del "salotto buono", che non verranno mai criticate dalla Rai (con la lodevole eccezione di "Mi Manda Raitre" e talvolta di "Report"), punto e basta. E questo non avviene perche' dall'alto arriva la velina, come molti immaginano, ma perche' il funzionario Rai intuisce (o pensa di intuire) cosa risultera' sgradito al potente.
Per la questione Blair/BBC, e' stato a mio avviso da un lato un caso esemplare di dimostrazione dell'autonomia della televisione di stato, che e' televisione "di stato", ossia espressione della nazione, non "del governo", ma dall'altro uno scivolone verso il sensazionalismo.
La BBC ha sbagliato nel non tutelare adeguatamente la riservatezza della sua fonte (il dottor Kelly, poi suicidatosi in circostanze poco chiare), ma anche il governo si e' trovato in imbarazzo quando si e' smascherata l'inconsistenza delle sue affermazioni sulla minaccia militare irachena e soprattutto la fonte usata per gran parte del dossier (una ricerca condotta da uno studente anni prima, copiata spesso parola per parola).
Va detto che quello che qui viene definito "sensazionalismo" è quello che succede tutti i giorni nei telegionali italiani: si sbatte il presunto mostro in prima pagina, si domanda "che cosa ha provato" alle persone sopravvissute alle tragedie piu' disumane, e poi eventualmente si pubblica la rettifica. Rispetto agli standard della BBC, e' stato uno scivolone; rispetto agli standard italiani, purtroppo, e' stato un evento di ordinaria amministrazione.
ZN: Come vedi il rapporto Rai-Tv private e quello BBC-Private inglesi?
Paolo Attivissimo: Molto semplicemente, in Italia da tempo non c'e' contrapposizione fra le due entita'. Con l'eccezione dei programmi per bambini (che mi trovo a frequentare per ragioni di famiglia), faccio fatica a distinguere, se non per il logo, i programmi Rai da quelli delle TV private (perlomeno quelli delle reti Mediaset; taccio, per decenza, sul livello infimo delle televisioni locali, ridotte a deposito di vecchi cartoni giapponesi e squallidi telepromotori).
Rai e Mediaset hanno entrambi telepromozioni e spot; spesso si copiano a vicenda i format televisivi; entrambi rincorrono l'audience pura (il numero di spettatori). Che differenza c'e'?
In Inghilterra, invece, la contrapposizione e' netta: la mancanza di spot e l'impostazione piu' pacata e autorevole rende facile distinguere la TV commerciale (che e' sfacciatamente commerciale e se ne vanta) da quella nazionale (che e' orgogliosa di fare, come dicevo, programmi che magari vengono visti da quattro gatti ma a quei quattro gatti piacciono tanto).
La TV privata locale in Inghilterra sostanzialmente non esiste, in quanto non si e' mai passati dalla fase delle "antenne selvagge" degli anni Settanta: la TV commerciale e' divisa in concessioni regionali, e ciascuna emittente irradia programmi leggermente diversi e un telegiornale locale differente per ciascuna regione (un po' come fa Raitre).
Penso che dalla TV inglese ci siano lezioni da imparare per tutti gli operatori televisivi italiani, in termini di etica professionale, di soluzioni per l'introduzione delle nuove tecnologie, di tutela del cittadino e della sua privacy e di tutela dei minori.

How important is cricket for the UK culture? How does it influence people?
Cricket is extremely important for UK culture. It teaches children & young adults to develop social skills, discipline and helps them to interact. Something that is disappearing in the UK along with society, & local community spirit! More & more people in the UK don’t socialise anymore. Even in a pub, where traditionally people have interacted with others, the atmosphere is changing and the “Pub spirit” is falling apart. Therefore cricket & sports clubs are fulfilling a vital role in enabling youngsters to interact and develop their social skills.
Supporters have benefited immensely from the recent change in the format of the game. Instead of being restricted to watching a Sunday game (due to work commitments, spectators can now see the 20/20 competition and the PRO 40 competition, which have been geared towards providing excellent entertainment for fans. More importantly it has made the game accessible to fans by commencing after 4pm (allowing fans to watch a game after finishing work!).
Also SKY TV has been televising the new format and this has brought cricket to the armchair viewer much more frequently generating interest amongst football fans & women! Previously only a few games would have been televised, certainly test matches –where working people/ parents don’t have the spare time to watch TV all day (hence many cricket spectators were previously mainly retired people).
The way that cricket is progressing locally, with many professional overseas players arriving to play in the structured “Premier League System” has added to the quality and improved the competitiveness of the matches. Many leagues now have 12 to 15 overseas players and 15 to 20 professional players, many of whom have either played first class cricket previously or are currently doing so. This has also raised the standards tremendously in local cricket, and is assisting youngsters in bridging the gap between local & county cricket.
For example in the Nottinghamshire Premier Cricket League, there are 30 plus cricketers, who have played first class cricket, and a number of overseas cricketers, one side “West Indian Cavaliers” have regularly fielded half a dozen cricketers with first class experience.
Some sides in the league, current & previous sides, have benefited from international cricketers such as Phil Defreitas (Eng), David Irvine (Zim), Daniel Cullen (Aus), Linden Joseph (WI), Carlos Remy (WI), Henderson Jordan (Barbados) Andrew Jackman (Guyana), Brent Findlay (NZ), Andre Adams, Brent Findlay, & Rob Nicoll (NZ).
The Northern Premier League are another league currently benefiting from a large number of players from Pakistan, for example Ameer Khan & Stephen John, as well as some excellent South African players, such as Garnet Kruger, and Omari Banks from the West Indies.
The integration of different cultures has certainly assisted local cricketers, (team mates & opposition) in understanding different cultures around the world. You learn to respect views & values when you understand them.
Although there is a tremendous competitive edge to the cricket, there is also great friendship, respect and camaraderie amongst the players of different nationalities. Often the behaviour of the overseas players has been impeccable, showing how much respect they have for the UK.
Experiencing victory in a close fought game creates a fantastic adrenalin rush, sharing experiences such as these builds rapport, friendship and a unique bond amongst players. This is does not alter among cultures or nationalities.
Having benefited from playing with & against some wonderfully talented cricketers, you learn so much from them, and they certainly bring the best out of you, taking your game to another level. I have not only played in the UK, but also in Malaysia, and have passed on my knowledge to try & assist the local players over there. Malaysia have a vision of playing regular Test Cricket by year 2020, the country is really backing the sport, assisted by numerous large sponsors, promoting youngsters with a new Cricket Acadamy, near Kuala Lumpur. This is very refreshing indeed. One notable Malaysian cricketer making a name for himself at Somerset, is Arul Suppiah. After coming to England to attend the Millfield School, Arul has turned in to an excellent cricketing prospect indeed.
Other nations like Kenya & Bangladesh have progressed beyond recognition with Bangladesh recently beating Australia. This clearly shows what can be achieved with focus, vision and planning.
Opportunities are now so great that cricketers can now play the game all year, travelling to the other part of the world during their close season. This can only improve the quality of the game, with cricketers learning all aspects of the game from different perspectives.
What’s it like being a cricket player?
Being a cricket player is both mentally & physically demanding, especially on the county circuit. Travelling around the country, playing cricket all day, arriving late at your hotel, eating late, & then up relatively early to prepare for the next days play.
Often you can finish a game one day & have to travel 3 or 4 hours for your next game the following day!
Practice is taken very seriously and the effort you put in will produce your just rewards, during the games. Many players also play weekend cricket for local sides to enhance their income. However this can produce additional strain, and is not always the best option, especially for a bowler who has bowled many overs during the week and requires some rest. However, batsmen can benefit from the extra time at the crease and boost their confidence with some high scores!
At pre-season the work commences with a hard fitness regime to be match fit, often a diet combined with a vigorous routine. This is extremely hard work and takes will power & discipline. Often over doing it can often find an injury. During the season you must be 100% fit otherwise slight injuries will be exposed and exaggerated, by the heavy schedule and work load.
Interesting fact about cricket?
In Malaysia six years ago, I attended an ICC cricket dinner, with a Mr D K Lillee in attendance. He is a terrific guy and is a real character, a typical Ozzie!
His diplomacy did however create a rather funny moment, when discussing how to address the previous King’s son “Tuanku (royal title) Imran”! Mr Lillee said, “On meeting Tuanku, he said words to the effect” – “My name is Tuanku, but you can call me Peter if you like?” Mr Lillee then advised the audience – “What made you think I wouldn’t have called you Peter anyway!” This was said in a jovial manner & did not offend the gentlemen & ladies present. However typical Australian humour!
This also emphasises the importance of having characters involved in the game, and making the game more accessible to all levels & classes of society, rather than the privileged few!
Cricket in India, from an English perspective!
The great thing about India is the passion for cricket. Wherever you have open space you will see children having fun playing cricket with a smile on their face. Sometimes they will use a stick for a bat, just so they can play the game. The streets in India provide a springboard for future talent. However in England many schools no longer play cricket, therefore the game is much less accessible than 20 to 30 years ago. The crowds and atmosphere reiterate the passion, and Eden Gardens has probably the loudest spectators throughout the world! This emphasises the amount of passion for the game in India.
How do cultures differ in the way they play the game?
The Indian & Pakistan communities take cricket very seriously, they live & breathe cricket, and tend to be very strong mentally in their approach to the game and when playing. They seem to be able to hold their concentration for very long periods. You can see this in test matches when you find English batsmen may score 100, whereas the Indian & Pakistan cricketers seem to score more “big” hundreds or double hundreds. English batsmen have the attitude they have achieved when reaching a hundred, and seem to lose their concentration often out to a loose shot. Indian & Pakistan batsmen have the ability to retain their concentration at this time. This is very similar to the Australian method. I believe the Australian influence is very strong in Asia and something that is at last creeping into English cricket.
How is cricket developing in UK?
The recent Ashes victory for England has revitalised the game in the UK, and assisted in bringing cricket to the people. Certainly at Club & County level there has been a substantial increase in spectators attending games. It has also had an impact with many more youngsters turning up for cricket training and nets at all levels, U9’s, U11’s, U13’s etc... The way the game is moving in the UK now, resembles the Kerry Packer era, which certainly aided cricket development in Australia. Let’s hope English cricket follows suit!

La televisione in Gran Bretagna ha senz'altro un ruolo molto importante, ma non credo sia centrale quanto lo e' in Italia. I quotidiani qui in GB sono molto diffusi e molto letti da tutte le fasce sociali, anche se in molti gran parte la loro qualita' e' scadente e si basano piu' sullo scandalo e la provocazione -- penso a The Sun e alle sue classiche donnine in topless a pagina 3 -- che sulla qualita' del giornalismo.
Sono comunque una fonte considerevole di informazione (e disinformazione), e tolti di mezzo questi tabloid semiscandalistici, il cui contenuto e' fortemente controllato dagli orientamenti politici dei proprietari, ci sono testate ben piu' autorevoli che contano un elevato numero di lettori e fanno del gran giornalismo.
Sono testate che non hanno scrupoli a fare quello che curiosamente in Italia ben pochi giornalisti fanno e ben pochi editori consentono, ossia andare sul campo, magari in incognito, e fare vera ricerca, verifica e indagine.
Questo tipo di giornalismo in Italia sembra essere presente soltanto nei programmi satirici come Striscia la Notizia o Le Iene.
Un'altra differenza importante è che l'offerta televisiva inglese è molto piu' frammentata di quella italiana. Oltre ai soli cinque canali terrestri (il canale generalista BBC1, il canale 'culturale' BBC2, la TV commerciale di ITV, Channel 4 e Channel 5), ci sono infatti da anni le offerte via satellite di Sky, che contava gia' un milione di abbonati nel 1990 e ora ne ha 17 milioni.
In piu' si e' aggiunta da un paio d'anni la famosa televisione digitale terrestre tanto contestata in Italia, che inizialmente e' stato un flop ma ora, dopo un drastico cambio di politica commerciale (abolizione del canone per la TDT), sta prendendo piede, con decine di canali gratuiti. Un decoder TDT qui costa 75 euro e si compra al supermercato.
In conseguenza di questa frammentazione, e' raro che l'intera popolazione si trovi a condividere lo stesso programma, per cui una trasmissione televisiva non ha lo stesso impatto e la stessa grande audience di un evento televisivo italiano.
Ci sono alcune eccezioni notevoli, come le soap opera Eastenders e l'immortale Coronation Street, che sono in onda da sempre (la seconda è iniziata nel 1960) e sistematicamente radunano oltre dieci di milioni di spettatori a puntata e sono parte integrante della cultura locale (e' normale sentire due persone sull'autobus che discutono delle disavventure degli interpreti di "Corrie" come se si trattasse di persone reali, spesso con effetti comici), o l'autorevolissimo Ten O'Clock News della TV commerciale.
ZN: Molto spesso si contrappone la BBC alla Rai: in termini di presenza della pubblicità , in termini di informazione attendibile ed oggettiva, in termini di spazio dato a programmi di qualità come divulgazione scientifica ed artistica, concerti di musica "seria", programmi educativi. E' un mito, meglio una "bufala" o c'è qualcosa di vero?
Paolo Attivissimo: C'e' molto di vero. Innanzi tutto, la differenza che balza agli occhi e' la totale, totale assenza di pubblicita' nei canali della BBC. Niente telepromozioni, niente spot, nulla. Il canone televisivo costa 116 sterline (circa 167 euro) l'anno, ma il piacere di vedere un film o un documentario senza interruzioni val bene la differenza rispetto alla soluzione mista canone+spot della Rai.
L'attendibilita' dell'informazione BBC e' proverbiale, tant'e' vero che spesso persino nei paesi arabi -- in cui il Regno Unito non e' molto ben visto -- viene usata, tramite il World Service satellitare e radiofonico, per sapere davvero cosa sta succedendo. La BBC si vanta spesso di essere stata criticata, ai tempi del conflitto delle Falklands, dalla Thatcher per essere stata "troppo filoargentina".
C'e' da dire comunque che c'e' una sorta di censura piuttosto pesante, o per meglio dire una scelta di produrre informazione rassicurante, combinata con un'etica professionale molto rigorosa e rispettata. Qui l'integrita' del giornalista e' tutto.
Proprio in questi giorni, un celeberrimo conduttore televisivo, Robert Kilroy-Silk, si e' visto sospendere il programma per aver fatto delle affermazioni razziste (anti-islamiche) in un articolo di giornale. Qui in GB, una microfonata in faccia come quella di Del Noce all'inviato di Striscia la Notizia sarebbe costato il posto al direttore di Raiuno.
Il telegiornale non e' gridato, non si sbattono immagini di pozze di sangue in prima serata, si avvisano i telespettatori se ci sono sequenze con flash ripetuti di fotografi (possono indurre crisi negli epilettici) o immagini troppo crude (mai comunque trasmesse prima delle 21, ora dello "spartiacque" o "watershed", ossia del momento in cui in teoria i bambini vanno a letto -- e molti lo fanno davvero).
Questo non significa che non vi sia informazione o che vi siano tabu': dopo le 21 va in onda davvero di tutto. For example in the Nottinghamshire Premier Cricket League, there are 30 plus cricketers, who have played first class cricket, and a number of overseas cricketers, one side “West Indian Cavaliers” have regularly fielded half a dozen cricketers with first class experience.
Some sides in the league, current & previous sides, have benefited from international cricketers such as Phil Defreitas (Eng), David Irvine (Zim), Daniel Cullen (Aus), Linden Joseph (WI), Carlos Remy (WI), Henderson Jordan (Barbados) Andrew Jackman (Guyana), Brent Findlay (NZ), Andre Adams, Brent Findlay, & Rob Nicoll (NZ).
The Northern Premier League are another league currently benefiting from a large number of players from Pakistan, for example Ameer Khan & Stephen John, as well as some excellent South African players, such as Garnet Kruger, and Omari Banks from the West Indies.
The integration of different cultures has certainly assisted local cricketers, (team mates & opposition) in understanding different cultures around the world. You learn to respect views & values when you understand them.
Although there is a tremendous competitive edge to the cricket, there is also great friendship, respect and camaraderie amongst the players of different nationalities. Often the behaviour of the overseas players has been impeccable, showing how much respect they have for the UK.
Experiencing victory in a close fought game creates a fantastic adrenalin rush, sharing experiences such as these builds rapport, friendship and a unique bond amongst players. This is does not alter among cultures or nationalities.
Having benefited from playing with & against some wonderfully talented cricketers, you learn so much from them, and they certainly bring the best out of you, taking your game to another level. I have not only played in the UK, but also in Malaysia, and have passed on my knowledge to try & assist the local players over there. Malaysia have a vision of playing regular Test Cricket by year 2020, the country is really backing the sport, assisted by numerous large sponsors, promoting youngsters with a new Cricket Acadamy, near Kuala Lumpur. This is very refreshing indeed. One notable Malaysian cricketer making a name for himself at Somerset, is Arul Suppiah. After coming to England to attend the Millfield School, Arul has turned in to an excellent cricketing prospect indeed.
Other nations like Kenya & Bangladesh have progressed beyond recognition with Bangladesh recently beating Australia. This clearly shows what can be achieved with focus, vision and planning.
Opportunities are now so great that cricketers can now play the game all year, travelling to the other part of the world during their close season. This can only improve the quality of the game, with cricketers learning all aspects of the game from different perspectives.
What’s it like being a cricket player?
Being a cricket player is both mentally & physically demanding, especially on the county circuit. Travelling around the country, playing cricket all day, arriving late at your hotel, eating late, & then up relatively early to prepare for the next days play.
Often you can finish a game one day & have to travel 3 or 4 hours for your next game the following day!
Practice is taken very seriously and the effort you put in will produce your just rewards, during the games. Many players also play weekend cricket for local sides to enhance their income. However this can produce additional strain, and is not always the best option, especially for a bowler who has bowled many overs during the week and requires some rest. However, batsmen can benefit from the extra time at the crease and boost their confidence with some high scores!
At pre-season the work commences with a hard fitness regime to be match fit, often a diet combined with a vigorous routine. This is extremely hard work and takes will power & discipline. Often over doing it can often find an injury. During the season you must be 100% fit otherwise slight injuries will be exposed and exaggerated, by the heavy schedule and work load.
Interesting fact about cricket?
In Malaysia six years ago, I attended an ICC cricket dinner, with a Mr D K Lillee in attendance. He is a terrific guy and is a real character, a typical Ozzie!
His diplomacy did however create a rather funny moment, when discussing how to address the previous King’s son “Tuanku (royal title) Imran”! Mr Lillee said, “On meeting Tuanku, he said words to the effect” – “My name is Tuanku, but you can call me Peter if you like?” Mr Lillee then advised the audience – “What made you think I wouldn’t have called you Peter anyway!” This was said in a jovial manner & did not offend the gentlemen & ladies present. However typical Australian humour!
This also emphasises the importance of having characters involved in the game, and making the game more accessible to all levels & classes of society, rather than the privileged few!
Cricket in India, from an English perspective!
The great thing about India is the passion for cricket. Wherever you have open space you will see children having fun playing cricket with a smile on their face. Sometimes they will use a stick for a bat, just so they can play the game. The streets in India provide a springboard for future talent. However in England many schools no longer play cricket, therefore the game is much less accessible than 20 to 30 years ago. The crowds and atmosphere reiterate the passion, and Eden Gardens has probably the loudest spectators throughout the world! This emphasises the amount of passion for the game in India.
How do cultures differ in the way they play the game?
The Indian & Pakistan communities take cricket very seriously, they live & breathe cricket, and tend to be very strong mentally in their approach to the game and when playing. They seem to be able to hold their concentration for very long periods. You can see this in test matches when you find English batsmen may score 100, whereas the Indian & Pakistan cricketers seem to score more “big” hundreds or double hundreds. English batsmen have the attitude they have achieved when reaching a hundred, and seem to lose their concentration often out to a loose shot. Indian & Pakistan batsmen have the ability to retain their concentration at this time. This is very similar to the Australian method. I believe the Australian influence is very strong in Asia and something that is at last creeping into English cricket.
How is cricket developing in UK?
The recent Ashes victory for England has revitalised the game in the UK, and assisted in bringing cricket to the people. Certainly at Club & County level there has been a substantial increase in spectators attending games. It has also had an impact with many more youngsters turning up for cricket training and nets at all levels, U9’s, U11’s, U13’s etc... The way the game is moving in the UK now, resembles the Kerry Packer era, which certainly aided cricket development in Australia. Let’s hope English cricket follows suit!
